Small shops ride out recession under Nashville West's shadow |
Development's visitors also drawn to mom-and-pops

In the shadow of the sprawling Nashville West shopping megasite, small businesses thrive.
"We love it," said Velma Demonbreun, executive director of the International Barber & Style College, where visitors can get a haircut from a student for $7 or a manicure for $10.
When Nashville West was still under consideration, its neighbors' greatest fears were that building a generic mega-strip mall on Charlotte Pike would change the character of one of Nashville's quirkiest corridors.
If anything, the small businesses along the corridor now say Nashville West may have helped keep them afloat during the economic downturn. Shoppers who came for the big-box mall shops also stayed to spread their dollars around the neighborhood.
